Deadline – Mira Grant

I have one complaint. I have to wait till next year to know what happens next. Someone invent a time machine.

This is the second book in the newsflesh series. The first, FEED, I reviewed a while back.

Now, I’m about to slap this behind a more tag. Because it has spoilers for the first book. As for the second, I’ll keep away from the major story points.

Following the events of the first book, there’s been a viewpoint switch to Shaun. Kinda needed, really. Course, Georgia’s along for the ride, at least in spirit. In a ‘Shaun’s gone crazy and is hearing his dead sister’ kind of way.  It works. And works well. Having the ability to have another character to talk to, when the primary is alone, it’s useful. And it gives a good indication of the strain he’s under.

Set a fair time after the funeral, Shaun still wants payback for his sister’s death. Picking up on a thread, once again he’s on the trail of a conspiracy, one with massive implications.

It’s twisty, but it doesn’t feel like it’s been thrown in for no reason. It all just makes sense. New characters come in, and plenty of reoccurring ones from the first book.

I liked it a lot. I’ve said before, that good fiction provokes an emotional response. This did. Good thing a lump in your throat isn’t a sign of amplification. And the author shows that just five words can bring everything to a crashing halt.

Get it, read it. Then go crazy waiting for the next one.
